THE KILN ROOMS: A COMMUNITY POTTERY WORKSHOP

Sophie Bennett
This project focuses on the vibrant artistic community of Hackney Wick, once the highest concentration of creatives in Europe. Responding to the gentrification of the neighbourhood it aims to create a space to support the struggling local ceramicists.

Situated on the site of an existing warehouse, curved volumes echoing pottery forms sit within the existing structure to form the different spaces. These include a workroom, kiln room, glaze store, drying room and a small cluster of domestic ‘kilns’ for inhabitation. A community garden transverses internally and externally and an elevated walkway allows the wider community to observe the craft, enabling them to interact with the local makers. A place for meeting, creating, connecting and learning about the craft of ceramics.
